How to crop an image in Photoshop

Cropping in Photoshop:

This function is used with great frequency by Photoshop users. The ability to resize and remove excess area in a photo is a basic skill used throughout.

In this tutorial, we will learn the fundamentals of cropping pictures.

1. Crop with the Crop tool (Crop)

The Crop Tool is a pretty straightforward tool and it's easy to figure out the basics of working with it. It will be the perfect option for you if you need to crop an image in Ps.

Open the file with the picture you want to crop.

Select the Crop Tool (C) from the toolbar.

After clicking, markers should appear at the edges of this document. They are needed to correct the image frame. Interaction with markers is relative to their location.

Let's try for example the bottom marker in the middle. Click on it with the left mouse button and hold it down. Then drag up to crop the picture from the bottom.

After releasing the marker, the area outside the cropping area will turn dark. Thus, we can preview how the image will look after cropping. Next, adjust this marker until the picture is cropped to the size we need.

After getting the desired result, click on the checkbox on the top floor of the layers panel to apply the changes. And if you don't like the end result, you can click Cancel right next to the checkmark.

Further, the entire excess area of the picture will be deleted.

To revert to the original image, you can undo the changes, for example through history. It is also possible to simply uncheck the Delete Cropped Pixels option and your region outside of the cropped area will remain unchanged.

Now I'll show you another way to use the Crop tool. We will now interact with the corner handles to trim the balloon. Using the markers at the same time, crop your object. Then click on the checkbox to apply the changes made.

As you can see, we now have a detached element cut from the source. So Cropping is a powerful and important tool that can be used in a variety of ways to work with pictures.

2. For what tasks can we apply "Cropping"?

There are a number of other options that we will use. Let's take a look at the Content Aware option. Use the Crop Tool to create a frame, but now make it bigger by dragging outside the borders of the picture. Be careful that the background area matches your actual background color. In the screenshot it is white.

Before clicking the "Accept" button to approve the cropping, fix the flag near the Content Aware option. Now the white part of the picture will be filled in accordance with the picture.

It is also possible to change the grid type of the Crop tool. In work, a smaller grid will come in handy, instead of the one that is used by default "Rule 1/3". For your individual work, the Golden Ratio and Golden Spiral grids are useful.

3. Cropping a picture with the selection tool in Photoshop

One of the ways you can crop a picture is by using the selection option. The fact that in the process of work in Photoshop users regularly use the selection option, this saves a lot of time and allows you to perform clearer cropping.

First open the Image you want to crop and then select one of the selection options. Including, I will be users often use the tool Rectangle Marquee (Rectangular area).

To crop using the selection option, create a selection and move the rectangle over the part you want to crop.

After selecting the desired area, go to Image> Crop (Image - Crop).

Ultimately, the picture will be cropped to the size of the selected border.

A few more tips: if you need the Crop tool options with selection, you need to select the Crop tool after selection.

It should be noted, you are able to crop on selections that are not rectangular. However, the smaller selection rectangle will always be selected for cropping. This is because the documents must be in the "box".
